PROJECT BEACH HOUSE
AT A GLANCE
What
A new, improved building to replace the burned down Beach House and incorporate the old store building to the rear, creating a new venue that offers fresh, locally sourced food in a casual and laid back environment.
Where
On the site of the old Beach House on Mudeford Sandspit, one of the most tranquil spots in the country, a site of special scientific interest, and a second home to multiple generations of “hutties”.
Why
Since the fire in 2018 we have been trading from a temporary site, BCP have planning permission granted to replace the building with a like-for-like rebuild. However the old building was a hodge-podge of a building, with no architectural merit, operational limitations, and no aesthetic value, as well as being an awkward, therefore costly shape to rebuild. We see an opportunity to build back better.
When
After already suffering a three year delay we hope to start building after summer 2022, and open ready for Spring 2023.
A New Beginning
We have learned a lot from operating the old café for 15 years, and also running the temporary site for 3 years. We have a unique location that has some complicated logistical issues, but offers unparalleled beauty. We have incorporated all the lessons we’ve learned during this time, as well as the input we’ve received during the public consultation on what people want to see, in redesigning a building that integrates better into its surroundings, and also gives us the opportunity to improve the services we can offer to the beach hut residents. With a casual daytime café to suit the easy-going family holiday atmosphere enjoyed by the community, a relaxed evening service with a focus on fresh food from local suppliers, and a more functional provision of a wider range of goods and essentials through the shop.
